If percent problems make your head spin, you’re not alone. I’ve seen so many students get stuck on these kinds of questions in SAT Math. But here’s the truth: percent problems are much easier than they seem—once you learn to spot their type and use the right tool to solve them!

In my SAT tutoring sessions, I teach a strategy I call the “Three Types of Percent Problems.” Once you understand these, it’s like unlocking a cheat code for faster, more accurate math.

Let’s break it down:

🔹 1. Finding the Part

Example:

💬 “What is 30% of 120?”

In this type of problem, you are given a percent and the whole, and you're being asked to find the part.

Here’s how you solve it:

✅ Using an equation:

n = 0.30 × 120

✅ Using a proportion:

30/100 = n/120

This is the most common percent question you’ll find, especially in word problems. Mastering this type will save you time and give you quick wins on test day!

🔹 2. Finding the Percent

Example:

💬 “What percent of 80 is 56?”

Now you’re given the part (56) and the whole (80), and you need to find the percent.

Solve it like this:

✅ Using an equation:

(n/100) × 80 = 56

✅ Using a proportion:

n/100 = 56/80

This format helps you set up questions where the word “percent” is missing—exactly what the SAT loves to throw at you.

🔹 3. Finding the Whole

Example:

💬 “45 is 60% of what number?”

In this final type, you’re given the part and the percent, and you’re being asked to find the whole.

Solve it like this:

✅ Using an equation:

45 = 0.60 × n

✅ Using a proportion:

60/100 = 45/n

SAT questions often sneak this type in by rephrasing the question slightly, so it's important to practice spotting it!

🧩 Pro Tip: Think of Percent Problems Like Puzzles

Each percent problem is like a puzzle—and you only need to find the right piece. Whether you use an equation or a proportion, solving them becomes super simple when you can identify which type it is.

And yes, you can get better at this. Infact, many of my students go from saying “I hate math!” to “Wait… this is actually fun?!”

💬 Want to Build Confidence, Speed & Accuracy?

This percent strategy is just one of many tools I use to help students unlock their math potential—whether it’s SAT, ACT, Algebra, Geometry, or Precalculus.
