"Just the other day, I was solving an equation with Arjun during our session, and after working through the problem, he paused and said, 'Hold on... something's off. I followed every step, but this answer just doesn't seem right.'
I could see his frustration. 'I think I know what happened,' I said with a smile. 'You’ve run into an extraneous solution.'
'But how?' Arjun asked, clearly puzzled. 'I didn’t skip anything!'
'I know, and that’s the tricky part,' I explained. 'Sometimes, even when you solve everything perfectly, an answer appears that doesn’t actually work in the original equation. It’s not your fault—it’s just something that happens with certain types of equations.'
Arjun sighed. 'So, how do I make sure this doesn’t happen again?'
'Good question!' I said. 'And that’s exactly what this blog is about. I’m going to walk you through why this happens and how you can spot these sneaky answers before they trip you up again. Once you know what to look for, it’ll make a lot more sense!'"
Introduction
In my tutoring sessions, one of the common challenges students face is when they solve an equation, get an answer that looks correct—but when they check it, it doesn’t work! These misleading answers are known as extraneous solutions. If you've ever felt frustrated solving an equation and finding your answer doesn’t fit, you're not alone! Understanding extraneous solutions can save you from this frustration and help you solve equations more accurately.
In this blog, we’ll break down what extraneous solutions are, why they happen, and how you can avoid them while solving math problems.
What Are Extraneous Solutions?
Extraneous solutions are false answers that appear during the process of solving an equation. They show up because of the steps we take to manipulate the equation. Even though they seem valid while solving, they won’t satisfy the original equation when you plug them back in. It’s like thinking you’ve solved a puzzle, only to realize a piece doesn’t actually fit.
Why Is It Important to Spot Extraneous Solutions?
If you don’t catch these false solutions, you might think your work is done, but the answer would be incorrect. Extraneous solutions can easily creep into your problem-solving process if you’re not careful, especially in more complex equations. By learning to identify and eliminate them, you improve your accuracy and strengthen your understanding of the math concepts involved.
Why Do They Happen?
Extraneous solutions pop up when we do things like:
Working with radicals (square roots): Isolating variables under square roots can lead to false solutions after squaring.

Solving Rational equations: Extraneous solutions in rational equations often occur because of the restrictions placed by the denominators. Since dividing by zero is undefined in mathematics, any solution that makes the denominator zero must be excluded from the set of valid solutions.

Dealing with absolute values: Handling absolute values can also result in extra solutions that don't hold when checked against the original equation.
